The renovation of the South Shore line train station continues to propel interest and economic development opportunities in Michigan City. The $101 million project, the first high-rise mixed-use TOD development in Indiana, encompasses 1.5 acres of land located at the corner of 11 th and Franklin streets. The project was initially earmarked as just a parking garage for the South Shore train as part of the region-wide Double Track project that cut travel times from Michigan City to Chicago. It evolved into a spot for not only the train station, but also apartments, retail and commercial space. Elements of the original façade are being incorporated into the new design as an avenue to blend past and present. City leaders see the project as a path toward further development and a lure to future development innovations and ideas. “We took a risk switching gears. Having a premier development was important to us and not just a parking garage. I don’t think people realize the risk and hits we took, but we stood strong about what we wanted,” Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch. “Michigan City is going through a Renaissance period, and it is going to be like no other.”
