Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) is a member of the NiSource family of energy providers. The company provides natural gas and electricity to Michigan City and all of northern Indiana. NIPSCO has the capacity to serve residential and commercial customers and industrial companies that have high energy needs. The company’s Economic Development Department partners with the EDCMC, the state, regional and local economic development organizations and other supporting groups to streamline the economic development process in our region.

Reliable high-speed internet access is available in Michigan City from both Comcast and AT&T at download speeds of up to 1,000 megabytes per second (Mbps). Fiber access is available at business parks as well as throughout the city.

Water

The Michigan City Department of Water Works is responsible for providing quality and reliable water service to the citizens and businesses of Michigan City and surrounding areas at reasonable rates. The department receives its water supply directly from Lake Michigan, a surface water source. The water is treated through a conventional treatment process and filtration system. The department has recently begun a series of upgrades to the system, which has a daily capacity of 20 million gallons with a current average daily output of 8-10 million gallons.

Sewer

The Michigan City Sanitary District is responsible for all sanitary sewers, storm sewers and catch basins within the Michigan City Sanitary District. It maintains all court-assigned drainage ditches, a full industrial pre-treatment program and a full-service wastewater laboratory. The district is responsible for the treatment and processing of all waters within the collection system, and for the construction and maintenance of sanitary and storm sewers.
