MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. – Michigan city leaders are eyeing the launch of the next mixed-use development project in the core of downtown at the site of 5th and Pine Streets.
Requests for Proposal are being sought to purchase and develop the city-owned eight acres with a focus on cultivating housing, retail and vibrant downtown experiences with the aim of adding a new grocery store.
“The 5th & Pine site is an important link between the Franklin Street Historic Commercial Corridor, the Uptown Arts District, Trail Creek and future waterfront redevelopment, and the Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa,” said Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch. “The redevelopment site is also within walking distance of the new 11th Street Station, bringing enhanced rail service, transit-oriented development, tourism and connectivity to Chicago and the Northwest Indiana Region.”
There will be a Developer Pre-Proposal Session on Tuesday May 14. Potential developers will be able to tour the site area and receive additional details on the RFP.
Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch said the city is seeking not only highly qualified development teams, but also those with a grasp on paving the way for creative growth.
“Leveraging the momentum of the recent investment of $450 million in private and public dollars in Michigan City and prime adjacency to downtown’s biggest assets and anchors, this property is a truly unique opportunity to enhance the resident, visitor and investor experience,” she said.
