Overview: Our thrust is to help Indiana executives of small or mid-sized manufacturing, services and technology-intensive firms to assess their current or planned business strategies with China, including two-way trade, investment, technology, collaboration, competition, etc. The event is designed as a highly interactive and practical exploration of why and how to design and follow a China business strategy. A sharing of best practices, an objective assessment of risks and rewards and discussion of realistic strategies, costs, challenges, timing, etc. is the goal. Presenters will include a chairman of a successful China-based business investment firm with years of experience helping U.S. firms do business in China, the director of China operations for a trade and business development firm in Shanghai, the former VP Asia for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, an Indiana attorney with deep China expertise and the CEO of a high tech firm specializing in China ventures.

Speaker Bios

Jon B. Anderson, Director, Kyosay Global
Jon B. Anderson is the Director – Shanghai for Kyosay Global, a U.S.-managed management consulting firm specializing in operational improvements and increased supply chain value for clients in North America, Europe and Asia. Jon is a seasoned executive and consultant with over 30 years of diverse experience working in and consulting to fast growth, industry-leading public and private manufacturing and service companies. His corporate experience includes international responsibilities in multi-site operations, acquisition due diligence, operations integration, business start-ups, human resource management and recruiting, and governmental relations in both union and non-union settings. He frequently speaks in both China and the U.S. addressing trade associations, visiting students and other groups regarding China market entry strategies, U.S. and China cultural issues and other U.S./China business-related challenges. Jon holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Purdue University, a Master in Business Administration from Pepperdine University and he has earned the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) designation from the Society for Human Resource Management. In China he is a member of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham Shanghai) and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CanCham Shanghai). Anderson has in-country experience in greater Asia, Europe, the UK and Mexico. Anderson has lived in Shanghai, since 2001.

Dr. Yonghao Hou, Patent Attorney
Dr. Hou is the founder and managing attorney for Enterprise Partners. Admitted in the state of Indiana and a registered patent attorney in United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), she focuses on counseling technology based clients in today’s complex economic and regulatory environment. Dr. Hou also has an advanced degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, which enables her to interact well with high tech industry in the bio-science realm. Dr. Hou provides patent procurement services, including drafting, filing and prosecuting patents in USPTO; and coordinating patent attorneys in foreign countries to obtain foreign patent
protection. Dr. Hou also helps clients develop the commercial aspects of their technology, including due diligence research, prior art search and analysis to form a freedom to operate opinion and/or negotiate a license/contract for clients’ patent portfolio. With her Chinese language and cultural understanding, Dr. Hou is especially skilled in assisting clients with Chinese business development and transactions. She has received her PhD and JD degrees from Indiana University.

Dwight Nordstrom, Chairman, PRI and Co-Chairman of the Manufacturing & Sourcing Forum, American Chamber of Commerce (China)
Dwight Nordstrom has more than 27 year of experience in doing business in China. Since 1990, he has been the chairman (former President) of Pacific Resources International (“PRI”), a USA manufacturing-holding company with support functions of consulting and engineering for start-up and/or expansion of manufacturing and application engineering in China. PRI specializes in planning and implementing small to medium high-technology manufacturing start-ups, mergers or acquisitions – over 25 of these since 1990. Each year, PRI does numerous site and economic feasibility analyzes for international clients looking at either starting-up a Greenfield manufacturing operation, acquisition, or a R&D center start-ups. PRI currently has equity or management interests in 10 manufacturing and related business operations in China (e.g. designing and building the following products: Ni-Ti wire, medical stents, industrial heating controls & parts, precision plating, antenna solutions, specialty chemicals and copper anodes for pcb & plating industries, etc). Mr. Nordstrom has also been General Manager of 9 factories in China with employment ranging from 30 to over 750. He was also in late 1980s China country manager for one of GE’s divisions; this was a GE corporate hire position. Mr. Nordstrom is in his fifth year as been co-chairman of the Manufacturing & Sourcing Forum for the American Chamber of Commerce (China). Mr. Nordstrom has written, on average, one published article per year since 1990.

Ping Poulsen, CEO & President, Safis Solutions
Ping Poulsen founded Safis Solutions, LLC and has experience leading projects to combat cardiovascular, infectious, oncologic, diabetic, orthopedic, neurologic, and pediatric diseases. She also has experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, social medicine, health education and public health. She has extensive experience in helping American firms find and pursue successful business collaborations with Chinese partners. She earned a Master of Science, received executive education from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 2005 and currently serves on the Indiana University Kelley School of Business Life Sciences Industry Advisory Board.
Poulsen is a member of the board of directors of the Asian American Alliance, based in Indianapolis, and also represents Safis as a member of the Business Advocacy Committee for the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce.

Mark Van Fleet, Executive Director, Purdue’s Global Business Engagement Initiative
Mark Van Fleet is the founder and Executive Director of Purdue’s Global Business Engagement initiative. This effort leverages University assets – including students, alumni, technology, faculty, research parks, business services, connections with foreign universities – to attract foreign investment and grow exports for Indiana, while supporting Purdue’s learning and discovery missions. The focus for GBE Phase 1: building commercial ties with China. Van Fleet is an international business professional with 25 years of accomplishments in the creation, marketing and management of successful trade development, export, investment promotion and trade policy advocacy programs. A former U.S. Foreign Service Officer, he served 20 years in senior positions at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC, including Vice President for Asia and Director of International Business Development, where he developed and implemented strategies to grow cross-border business. He left the Chamber to begin his own international consulting business in 2004, and moved to West Lafayette in 2008. He has degrees from Princeton University and the University of Virginia.
